Does every day seem like Halloween to you? Trick-or-Treat?

There are many ways we experience Halloween.  Obviously, the most common way involves a celebration with costume parties and trick-or-treating.  Other ways include playing pranks, telling scary stories, visiting haunted houses and watching horror movies.  As this blog is about Ego Awareness and the tricks our minds can play on us, I wanted to see how Halloween can be used as a metaphor in our everyday lives.

Masks - Pleasure and PainEveryday can be Halloween — the masks we wear and the imagined tricks that we believe as truth are two ways to do it.  The classic trick our mind plays is to create an identity for us to get attached to and identify with.  In fact, it’s so powerful that over time we begin to believe it is who we are.  Eckhart Tolle challenged this when he heard himself say, “I can’t live with myself.”  He realized that unless there must be two entities within him, the statement made no sense.  This insight helped him create a distinction between his natural self and his mind-made self or ego.

Recently, my eleven year old daughter and I were traveling on a long road trip.  Since I needed something to keep us occupied, I asked her, “Imagine a world without mirrors and cameras so that no one could see how they looked like?”  Promptly she responded, “They would go to the river and see their reflection.”  While it was a response that I hadn’t expected, I noticed that we were driving along a creek.

When I told her that they would not be allowed to see their reflection in the water or use any other method, I was dumb-founded to hear incredible words of wisdom from my eleven year old.  Since I was driving, I asked her to write them down for me to save and share.  She said, “You will see more of your true inner beauty.  People will judge you based on your actions, not your looks.”

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.  To find a  simple way to get to know the Ego and separate your Self from it, please visit my web site at www.krishnapendyala.com or read my book Beyond the PIG and the APE: Realizing SUCCESS and true HAPPINESS.

Happy Halloween!
