The Fiscal Cliff: To Synergize or Compromise?

The media is inundating us everyday with news about the Fiscal Cliff. In my humble opinion, what we have here is a classic standoff between two sides. Please take a look at what I refer to as the third choice and let me know what you think?

Nice story, and an outcome that has everyone happy, except the kids who now have the understanding that you don’t trust them to self regulate their behavior.

The difference between the “fiscal cliff” ( it isn’t really a cliff as much as a mental construct that will erode confidence and lower credit ratings ) and your family issue is that you have empathy towards the same parties on both sides.

In the political sense there is no talk of empathy, both sides prefer to to use scare tactics, and there is little real concern for those outside of the “Circle of Empathy”.

I’m not fully in agreement with your definition of compromise Krishna, it seems bogged down by Monday’s malaise perhaps;^) In every compromise there is a balance of loss and gain, so look at the half full view and this is the foundation of what we have accomplished as a species to date.

A wise man told me years ago a good compromise should not make anyone completely happy, but it should be fair, or the agreement will fail.

There is a high degree of narcism required to think that the world needs to be changed until it fulfills all your dreams, as there are other dreamers who draw their dreams from a different pile of expectations who deserve their nirvana just as you do.

  I like your comment on empathy, but would like to pinpoint who it is directed at. In our family example, it was for the welfare of our children. When it comes to politics, it needs to be directed for the welfare of our nation, not each party as you stated, “In the political sense there is no talk of empathy, both sides prefer to to use scare tactics, and there is little real concern for those outside of the “Circle of Empathy”.”
  
  Also, our kids understand that they are at an age where it is very difficult for them to self regulate and they are asking for us to help. This came about by raising their awareness of other kids and their inability to self regulate. We have started on a practice to increase their social and emotional learning and with that will come an increased level of self regulation.
  
  I truly appreciate your touching on that topic since I now have the opportunity to share the context in which those decisions were made.
  
  Lastly, on the definition of comprise, I use my definition to distinguish it from synergy. Why can’t we look for solutions that satisfy both parties, if they truly care about a common goal?
