Voice(s) in your head?

Everytime I speak to an audience to introduce the concept of the thinking mind, I usually start with the question, “Do you have a voice in your head?” The answer in unison accompanied by chuckles is, “Voice or Voices?”

We all tend to have a voice or voices in our heads that usually display the roles of a critic or a commentator. There are many more roles that could be played, but we will limit them to just the critic and the commentator for the purpose of this discussion.

These voice or voices are usually generated by the thinking mind or as I refer to it to my kids as the “monkey mind”. I tell them, “It is very clever and can do a lot of tricks for you. Make sure you are watching it carefully or else it will make a monkey out of you.”

It is very simple to just watch it and see it behave better, so to speak. It is like a child or a puppy, when someone is watching they are better behaved. The moment “you” begin to watch the thinking mind, you become one with your Core Self or as many call it, the witnessing presence. Just being in this space provides you access to higher levels of intelligence beyond your thinking mind.

“There is always an inner game being played in your mind no matter what outer game you are playing. How aware you are of this game can make the difference between success and failure in the outer game.” -Tim Gallwey
